Fiji Airways has been officially shortlisted for the prestigious 2026 APEX/IFSA Award in the category of Best Inflight Food or Beverage, highlighting the airline’s ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional onboard dining experiences rich in Fijian warmth and authenticity.

Andre Viljoen, Managing Director and CEO of Fiji Airways, said:
“I am proud to share that Fiji Airways has been shortlisted for the prestigious APEX/IFSA Best Inflight Food or Beverage Award. This recognition reflects the dedication of our teams who work tirelessly to bring Fijian warmth, culture, and world-class hospitality to life onboard every flight.”

Founded in 1947 by Australian aviator Harold Gatty as Katafaga Estates Ltd., Fiji Airways made its first commercial flight on September 1, 1951, operating a small de Havilland Dragon Rapide biplane between Nausori Airport in Suva and Drasa Airport near Lautoka. After Gatty’s death in 1958, the airline was acquired by Qantas and retooled as a regional carrier, renamed Air Pacific in 1971 to reflect its expanding reach across the South Pacific.

The Fijian government gradually increased its shareholding over the decades and today holds 52%, with the Fiji National Provident Fund owning 30% and Qantas holding 16%. The airline returned to its original name, Fiji Airways, in 2013 as part of a successful turnaround that bolstered its identity as the national carrier and highlighted its connection to Fijian culture.

From humble beginnings as a small island hopper, Fiji Airways has grown into a respected international airline serving 27 core destinations directly and more than 108 international destinations through codeshare partners. Its modern fleet includes Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft for regional routes and Airbus A350-900s for long-haul flights to cities in the US, Canada, Asia, and Oceania.

Throughout its history, Fiji Airways has played a vital role in supporting tourism and the economy of Fiji while showcasing authentic Fijian hospitality. The airline’s inflight experience has garnered multiple accolades, including the 2022 APEX Passenger Choice Award for Best Food & Beverage in the South Pacific. The current APEX/IFSA shortlisting for 2026 is further affirmation of its culinary innovation and exceptional service delivery.

Fiji Airways noted in a statement released “This nomination is a testament to the creativity, authenticity, and Fijian warmth infused in every meal, drink, and service touchpoint our team delivers. From the heart of our galleys to the smiles of our cabin crew, this honor reflects the passion and dedication that define the Fiji Airways experience. Join us in celebrating the Fijian spirit of Bula, excellence, and hospitality as we continue to soar to new heights

The airline continues to expand and modernize its fleet and network while prioritizing sustainability and community engagement. Operating from its primary hubs at Nadi and Nausori International Airports, Fiji Airways remains a symbol of national pride and a gateway for travelers to explore the Pacific with true Fijian warmth.

The 2026 APEX/IFSA Awards ceremony will take place in September 2025 in Long Beach, California, where winners in various airline service categories will be announced.
