Fiji’s tourism scene is about to get a thrilling upgrade with the launch of South Sea Cats, a vibrant new offering from the South Sea Cruises Group. Set to debut on May 16, 2025, this high-energy experience promises to redefine island adventures in the Mamanuca Islands.

Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, announced the launch with enthusiasm: “South Sea Cruises Group has launched South Sea Cats, an all new tourism experience here in Fiji starting next month! Offering half day ride and slide tours in the morning or afternoon, the tours offer epic snorkelling, sandbar visits, lunch and drinks aboard these brand new fast cats. The weather in Fiji just gets better and better this time of year, so make sure you put South Sea Cats on your list.”

A Fresh Take on Fiji’s Island Adventures

South Sea Cats introduces two purpose-built, 14.9-meter catamarans, designed in New Zealand and crafted in Fiji, cruising at a swift 22 knots and accommodating up to 40 passengers. Departing daily from Port Denarau, just 20 minutes from Nadi International Airport, these vessels combine speed, comfort, and innovation. What sets them apart? Fiji’s first inflatable slide on a commercial vessel, offering a playful plunge into the crystal-clear waters of the Mamanuca Islands.

The half-day “Ride & Slide” tours, available in morning (2.5 hours) and afternoon (4.5 hours) sessions, are built for adventure seekers. Guests can snorkel vibrant tropical reefs, explore scenic sandbars, and enjoy the thrill of sliding into the ocean. The morning tour includes morning tea, while the afternoon extended trip offers a gourmet light lunch. Both provide complimentary snorkelling gear, paddleboards, soft drinks, bottled water, local beer, and house wine. “With snorkelling gear provided and easy access off the front of the vessel (steps) or via the giant inflatable slide mounted on the roof, this is the best way to see these islands and return home with memories to last a lifetime,” notes the South Sea Cats website.

More Than Just Snorkelling

Beyond the “Ride & Slide” tours, South Sea Cats doubles as a resort transfer service, enhancing connectivity to Mamanuca Island resorts like Tokoriki, Matamanoa, Malolo, and Castaway. Morning and evening transfers ensure seamless travel for guests, making it a practical choice for both tourists and locals. The vessels’ air-conditioned lounges, open-air decks, and licensed bars create a holiday vibe from the moment you step aboard.

The South Sea Cruises Group, a titan in Fiji’s marine tourism with over a third of international visitors using their services, is no stranger to delivering award-winning experiences. Their portfolio includes day cruises to South Sea Island and Malamala Beach Club, overnight Blue Lagoon Cruises, and the Sabre sailing catamaran. South Sea Cats builds on this legacy, blending adventure with accessibility. Group General Manager Fiji and Asia Sales Loretta St Julian-Ooms emphasized the need for advance bookings: “It is recommended to book in advance, the demand is there right now, we are getting a lot of requests, and that is why we actually recommend people to book a day prior, for those travelling from overseas, it’s the same process.”

A Boost for Fiji’s Tourism and Local Economy

The launch aligns with Fiji’s tourism boom, as evidenced by Tourism Fiji’s record-breaking digital growth in 2024. South Sea Cats not only caters to international visitors but also supports locals with year-round discounts, including a 20% reduction for those with valid identification. The project enhances access to remote islands, fostering economic activity in the Mamanuca region. By offering unique experiences like guided snorkelling and sandbar visits, it strengthens Fiji’s position as a premier destination for leisure and adventure.

The catamarans’ design prioritizes guest comfort, with ample seating and a fun crew setting the tone with laid-back tunes. For groups or families, the vessels can be chartered for private adventures, accommodating up to 36 people for bespoke reef explorations. Complimentary coach transfers from Nadi, Denarau, Wailoaloa, and select Coral Coast hotels make the experience hassle-free.

Sustainability and Community Commitment

As part of the South Sea Cruises Group, owned by Fijian Holdings Ltd., South Sea Cats operates with a commitment to sustainability. The group supports the Yasawa Trust Foundation and engages in efforts to protect Fiji’s pristine marine environment. This ethos ensures that the natural beauty of the Mamanuca Islands—home to vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life—remains preserved for future generations.

Why South Sea Cats is a Must-Do

With Fiji’s dry season kicking in, May is the perfect time to experience South Sea Cats. The combination of high-speed catamaran rides, snorkelling in turquoise waters, and the sheer fun of an inflatable slide makes this a standout adventure. As Hill noted, “The weather in Fiji just gets better and better this time of year, so make sure you put South Sea Cats on your list.” Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a family, or a couple seeking a unique day out, South Sea Cats delivers an unforgettable slice of Fiji’s island paradise.
