Fiji Airways has been officially recognized as one of the world’s top 10 airlines. It received the prestigious APEX World Class Airline award for 2026 from the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX). This honour places Fiji Airways among an elite group of only 10 airlines worldwide. Notably, it is the smallest airline by fleet size ever to receive this distinction and the only carrier in Oceania to be recognised.

“We are truly humbled by this recognition. For a small airline like Fiji Airways to stand alongside the giants of global aviation is like a modern-day David taking on Goliath — an incredible honour that shows what dedication, heart, and vision can achieve. It’s a testament to something we’ve always known: one of our core strengths lies in the heartfelt care our people provide and the genuine connections we create. Vinaka vakalevu to our dedicated team and our loyal passengers for making this honour possible.”

This award crowns one of the most comprehensive transformation programs in Fiji Airways’ history. The airline reimagined every aspect of its service. It invested in new galley and service equipment. Supply chains were strengthened to feature freshly sourced produce. Moreover, local Fijian businesses partnered with the airline to deliver authentic experiences.

Fiji Airways also introduced new premium onboard products. This refreshed experience elevates travel across every cabin. The enhanced service is rolling out on select routes now. Soon, every flight will feature this world-class experience.

Company Overview of Fiji Airways

Founded in 1951, Fiji Airways is the flag carrier airline of Fiji. It operates international flights from hubs at Nadi and Suva. The airline serves 27 destinations worldwide. Through codeshare partnerships—especially with Qantas—it offers access to 108 more international destinations.

Formerly known as Air Pacific, the airline rebranded to Fiji Airways in 2013. As of April 2025, it joined the global Oneworld alliance. This connection has expanded its network and partnerships considerably.

Importance to Fiji’s Tourism and Economy

The airline plays a vital role in Fiji’s tourism industry. It transports about 64% of visitors arriving by air. Tourism is one of the largest contributors to Fiji’s GDP and employment. Fiji Airways employs over 2,000 staff across its subsidiaries. The latest fiscal reports show the airline earned revenues exceeding FJD 1.7 billion (approximately USD 770 million).

Fiji Airways operates a modern fleet. Regional routes use Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. Long-haul international flights fly on Airbus A350 aircraft. These aircraft contribute to the airline’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and premium passenger care.

Strategic Leadership

Led by CEO André Viljoen, Fiji Airways has embarked on several strategic initiatives. These include expanding routes, enhancing digital capabilities, and improving customer experience. Viljoen’s leadership has been key to the airline’s recent successes, including this top 10 global ranking.

Ownership of the airline is predominantly by the Fiji government (52%) and the Fiji National Provident Fund (30%). Qantas and other Pacific island governments hold the remaining 16%.

Economic Impact and Future Outlook

Fiji Airways underpins the national economy by supporting tourism. The airline’s strong recovery and growth in 2025 mirror global travel’s resurgence post-pandemic. Early 2025 saw record profits for Fiji Airways, fueling a tourism boom and positive economic momentum.

The expanding route network strengthens Fiji’s connectivity with the world. Recently launched direct flights, such as Nadi to Cairns, facilitate inbound tourism and increase trade and business opportunities.

These developments align with government priorities. They seek to diversify and strengthen the economy through tourism and related sectors. Fiji Airways is central to these efforts as a strategic national asset.

The airline’s integration of locally sourced products and partnerships helps retain economic benefits within Fiji. It also showcases Fijian culture and hospitality to international visitors.

Fiji Airways defies expectations. It grew from outside the world’s Top 100 airlines in 2016 to a top 10 airline by 2026. This rise reflects strategic vision, operational excellence, and genuine customer care. The airline’s ongoing transformation and commitment to innovation and sustainability position it as vital to Fiji’s economic prosperity. It continues to elevate its status on the international stage while fostering growth at home.
