Steamships Trading Company Ltd. (Steamships) has been a stalwart in Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) business landscape for over a century, playing a pivotal role in the country’s economic development.
Established in 1920, the company has evolved from its humble beginnings as a shipping agency to become a diversified conglomerate with interests in various sectors, including logistics, property, and hospitality.
Steamships’ journey in PNG began in the early 20th century when the company established its shipping agencies in the country. Over the decades, the company has weathered economic and political changes, adapting and expanding its operations to meet the evolving needs of the PNG market.
Today, Steamships is a household name, synonymous with reliability, innovation, and a deep commitment to supporting the growth and prosperity of the nation. One of the company’s key milestones was the acquisition of the Steamships Shipping Agency in 1962, which solidified its position as a leading player in the country’s logistics and transportation sectors.
This strategic move paved the way for Steamships to diversify its operations, venturing into property development, hospitality, and other industries that have contributed significantly to PNG’s economic growth. In recent years, Steamships has continued to demonstrate its unwavering support for PNG.
Against this backdrop of success, Steamships has announced a planned succession move, with Mr. Chris Daniells officially assuming the role of Managing Director on Monday, 1st July 2024. Daniells, who previously worked for Steamships Shipping Agencies as National Marketing Manager between 1998-1999, is no stranger to the company or the PNG market.
“There has been a considerable development and change since I was in Port Moresby in the late 90’s,” said Daniells.
“I’m looking forward to continuing Steamships’ tradition of supporting PNG, investing in long-term commitments, and building sustainable and rewarding partnerships as we enter a new period of growth for the economy and the country. These are exciting times for PNG and Steamships is very much at the centre of them.
Daniells becomes the 17th Managing Director of Steamships, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his previous roles, including Chief Commercial Officer for Singapore-based Swire Shipping and Managing Director of Swire Projects. His appointment marks a new chapter for the company, as it continues to play a pivotal role in shaping PNG’s economic landscape.
The team at Steamships wishes the outgoing Managing Director, Mr. Rupert Bray, well in his new role as Executive Director Senior of Swire Coca-Cola in Hong Kong.
“We have a strong team and an exciting road ahead. Rupert’s six years in Steamships have established a strong foundation for the growth of the company, and his support during the transition has been invaluable. I wish him all the best in this next phase in his career,” said Daniells.
